On this first evening of winter I stepped amid the darkness outside and glimpsed two star-like glimmers in the deep ocean skies just above the golden aura glow of the horizon Two cosmic bodies brought over several centuries into a Great Conjunction— radiant Jupiter and companion Saturn . . .although they appeared so simple and small from our faraway perspective …a storybook image reminiscent of “The Second Star to the Right” in Neverland lore I stood enveloped in shadows and wondered

I have heard of the writing process as a return to childlike wonder …when we gazed around as if for the first time at a world unfamiliar in many aspects yet marvelous to behold— because it was ours Still… I wonder if (perhaps) writing could also be like a lens through which we learn to notice things that both in childhood and as adults might otherwise pass us by without careful attention or study …such as the subtle differences in the way birds flap their wings or glide …speech patterns or accents that change from one location to the next …the many varieties of sunsets
